Itinerary: Whitewater
Minneapolis
and Minnesota are known for water-based activities, whether it is canoeing on
one of the famous "10,000 lakes" or boating on the rivers. A good
way to ease into (or out of) the hair-raising whitewater adventures that await
in following itinerary is to take a Anson Northrup and Betsey Northrup Paddleboat
excursion on the mighty Mississippi River.
When it comes to pinpointing whitewater adventures in Idaho you can "circle
the entire state." One to seven day adventures on mild and wild water are
available from Boise, Coeur d�Alene, Sandpoint, Riggins, Lewiston, McCall,
Twin Falls, Grangeville, Salmon and Stanley. Rivers floated include the Salmon
"River Of No Return," the pristine Lochsa and Selway Rivers, the mighty
Snake River and day trips are available along the upper Salmon and Payette Rivers.
Near Kalispell, Montana, whitewater, scenic and fishing float trips on the
Flathead Wild and Scenic River System are available along Glacier Park�s
boundaries. The popular action-adventure film, "River Wild," was filmed
here. Glacier Wilderness Guides can arrange a variety of package trips on the
rivers, as well as wildlife and scenic tours. Trips range from half-day to five
days, including lunch and dinner floats. Whitewater and scenic floats take off
on the Gallatin and Yellowstone Rivers from locations near Bozeman. Jackson�s
Snake River offers whitewater below town and scenic floats above. Grand Teton
Lodge Company offers a popular series of relaxing float trips on the Snake River
at the Base of the Tetons. Whitewater trips also headquarter out of Cody, on
the east side of Yellowstone, and the scenic Wind River Canyon is floated by
companies based in Thermopolis. Near Saratoga, scenic, fishing and whitewater
trips through Northgate Canyon are available on the North Platte River.
The Missouri River, which divides the state of South Dakota in half, offers
swimming, boating, camping, picnicking, and hiking as well as great fishing
for walleye and northern pike. Watercraft rentals are available in Chamberlain,
and float trips and houseboats are available in Wagner.
