As Wyoming’s gateway to the Black Hills, the entire area is rich with historic and cultural sites along with scenic natural vistas, archeological interests, and recreational outlets. The proposed 78 mile Wyoming Black Hills Scenic Byway embodies each of the six nominating categories: history, culture, scenic, natural, recreation, and archeology.

The Rocky Mountain states of Idaho, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming are blessed with some of the most beautiful and pristine scenic areas in the country. For the hearty outdoor oriented visitor the desire to experience the basic beauty of the environment is best served by including camping as a vital part of an overall holiday!

Byway Basics
The 163 miles between Pinedale and Dubois comprise the Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway. This horseshoe-shaped combination of highways includes U.S. 26/287 and U.S. 26/89/191. The route crosses diverse landscapes including badlands, ranch land, and the high montane.

Few truly wild places remain in this country. Custer State Park is one of them. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the park is home to a variety of wildlife and magnificent scenery spanning 71,000 acres. Nearly 1,300 bison, commonly called buffalo, roam the prairies and hills of Custer State Park, which they share with swift pronghorn, shy elk, sure-footed mountain goats and curious burros. Visitors often enjoy close encounters with these permanent residents along the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road that winds around the southern edge of the park.
